The 2021 release of "Give Me The Sunshine" by Leo’s Sunshipp on Expansion Records (catalogue number EX7RSD42) is a definitive seven-inch reissue of a track widely considered one of the greatest Rare Groove anthems of all time. Originally issued for Record Store Day 2021, this release was a strictly limited, hand-numbered pressing of 1,000 copies, designed to offer collectors two elusive versions of the track on a single 45 RPM disc. The Release Details Format: 7" Vinyl, 45 RPM (Limited to 1,000 hand-numbered copies). Release Date: 12 June 2021. Side A: "Give Me The Sunshine" (Original US 7" Mix) (4:12). Side B: "Give Me The Sunshine" (Extended UK 7" Grapevine RED 3 Mix) (4:40). Why This Record Is Significant Expansion Records produced this 45 to address the extreme rarity of the song’s original single formats. The Elusive US Mix: The A-side features the original 1980 American seven-inch mix from the Lyon's Record Co. label. This version had not been reissued on vinyl for over forty years and original copies often command prices exceeding £100. The Grapevine Connection: The B-side is a "brand new" extended version of the mix that appeared on the UK Grapevine label (the predecessor to Expansion founded by Richard Searling and John Anderson). Member Heritage: The group was a trio consisting of Kenny Stover, Johnny Simone, and Alvin Few. The name "Leo's Sunshipp" was chosen because all three members were born under the zodiac sign of Leo. About the Sound "Give Me The Sunshine" is the quintessential summer soul record. The Atmosphere: It is celebrated for its languid, sun-drenched groove, featuring soaring strings, atmospheric vibraphones, and a relaxed yet persistent rhythm section. Songwriting Pedigree: The track was co-written by Johnny Simone and Kenny Stover. Stover was a staff songwriter at Motown and a brother of Elgie Stover (who co-wrote Marvin Gaye’s "Inner City Blues"). Both Kenny and Johnny notably performed as backing vocalists on Marvin Gaye’s landmark album Here, My Dear. Collector's Note: If you find a copy with a yellow and white label, you have the "Expansion Demo" version, which was designed to mimic the appearance of 1970s radio station promotional copies.
