PROFILE: Locksmith were an ensemble of funk and jazz session musicians who came together for this one studio recording, “Unlock The Funk”. They recorded this album having previously worked together as a backing band for Grover Washington Jr, recording with him too on his albums “Reed Seed”, “Paradise” and “Live At The Bijou”.
In the UK, the instrumental “Blackjack” became a jazz funk classic, and when released as a single entered the Top 50. “Far Beyond” was sampled on both Basement Jaxx’s “Red Alert” (1999) and Audio Jacker ‘s “Jack That Body” (2012). The album was produced by drummer Harvey Mason in-between his own solo albums “Groovin’ You” and “M.V.P.”.
Members of Locksmith later recorded together on a solo album for violinist John Blake on his 1987 album “Adventures Of The Heart”, but in the main they went their separate ways playing for and recording with numerous other artists.
