About this Album

Profile
Twelve-months on and Jazz FM is back with a bang. On October 6th 2009, Jazz FM celebrated its first birthday and what a year it’s been. Our audience levels have surpassed all our expectations. We now have almost half a million people listening to the station every week. Thank you!
We have been involved with Expansion Records in the two Luxury Soul Weekenders in Blackpool and Birmingham respectively, and we are looking forward to our third collaboration at the Blackpool Hilton this coming January with the amazing Chapter 8. Plus, this is our fifth CD release in just under a year. It follows two others in the ‘Sound of...’ series, a ‘Dinner Jazz’ album compiled by Sarah Ward and the latest addition to the family ‘The Soul of Smooth Jazz’, expertly compiled by Jazz FM presenters Ralph Tee and Steve Quirk (my co-compilers of this CD).
This collection features the usual blend of Smooth Jazz, Luxury Soul and Jazz Funk. The brilliant saxophonist Boney James features on a cover version of ‘Stop, look, listen to your heart’ , you should follow Boney on Twitter as there’s always something really interesting going on in his life worth reading. Talking of saxophonists; Kenny G, Euge Groove and David Sanborn (all of whom have been in the UK this year) feature on this CD alongside new girl on the block, Jessie J, who not only plays the sax but sings too.
Personally I love Gwen McCrae’s anthem ‘All this love I’m giving’, it’s such a great party record and I never finish a gig without playing this song. I’m also really pleased that George Benson’s ‘Love ballad’ is part of this collection too. This record is very personal to me and if I could create an all time top 10, this track would definitely feature. There are three really great examples of rare and extremely hard to find gems on here too. The Luther Vandross track ‘She’s so good to me’ was never released as a single (although it was featured in the iconic 80’s movie The Goonies and on the flip-side of the 12” ‘Give me the reason’ in 1987) is a real treasure, Rodney Franklin’s ‘In the center’, which was released on a self titled album thirty one years ago in 1978 and the truly awesome ‘Live’ version of the Maze classic ‘Golden time of the day’ which was recorded at the legendary Hammersmith Apollo in 1982.
When you put all these tracks together with contemporary soul and r&b artistes D’Angelo and Maxwell and legends; Larry Carlton, Aretha Franklin with a song produced by Luther Vandross and co-written by Luther and Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Harvey Mason, The Manhattan Transfer, Leon Ware and George Duke (who came into Jazz FM earlier this year and has now featured on all three of these ‘Sound of...’ releases). Then add new music like ‘Bloom’ from Cindy Bradley, ‘Comfort zone’ by Trish Andrews and James Day’s ‘Outta the funk’ you have a real collection to suit every mood.
I did say at the end of the last CD that: ‘We had too many tracks and I couldn’t wait for this next one’. Well, here it is. I hope you agree that it was worth waiting for.
Enjoy.... and here’s to the next twelve months and thank you for your continued support.
